What If?

What if I….

…finished something today I put off yesterday

…began something new today I was afraid to begin yesterday

…called someone today I thought of calling yesterday

…wrote a letter to someone today I thought of yesterday

…started a new habit today I wanted to begin this year

…set aside time for myself today that I wouldn’t yesterday

…thought better thoughts today than I did yesterday

…spoke kinder words today than I did yesterday….

Where would I be tomorrow if I began today?

Begin!

That’s all it takes….just begin!

Where will tomorrow take you if you begin today?

Hold the Line!

Several years ago a small midwestern town had a choice.

The story goes…’outsiders’ came to town with the intent to deface and destroy the town, the buildings, the landscape, the community, and drive the good people out.

They began by spraying ugly graffiti messages on one building wall. Then they defaced another wall. The town people had to make a decision. Were they going to allow this to continue until the whole town was sprayed and then overtaken by non-caring individuals whose intent was the destruction of the community? (We’re not talking about interesting landscape designs or abstract paintings; we’re talking about the other kind of graffiti….applied from a heart of anger and malice.)

The town decided not to say anything to anybody, but just paint over the ugly graffiti.

The following night the graffiti artists returned and marked up the walls.

Next day town-folk got their paint rollers out and painted over the graffiti.

Again the graffiti came back. The town-folk rolled up the walls again!

It was a bit of paint warfare, but eventually the angry graffiti artists packed up and left town.

This is a prime example of overcoming bad with good….they didn’t even have to say a word! They used their paint and covered it up over and over until it no longer was there.

Let’s think what we can do in our community, neighborhood, state, country to silently snuff out the destruction and replace it with something better.

“It’s not my responsibility… that’s why I pay taxes, someone else has to do it!”

That’s exactly why we need to do it! We pay taxes and it’s us taxpayers property! It’s our ‘ranch’! Why let our property look trashy? Cut down the thistles, pick up the trash and the sticks, organize a dumpster drive and get rid of old tires and appliances. There’s work to be done! Let’s clean up our areas, have a bit of pride and satisfaction of a good deed done together 🙂

I have my trashbag in hand! Let’s go!

Birthdays

Today our family celebrated two birthdays! One of them was mine.

Growing up my birthday fell at a busy time of year and often was overlooked, which didn’t seem to bother me too much, that’s just the way it was. Many of my friends got lots of birthday presents and often I didn’t get any. One year in elementary school another girl asked me what I got for my birthday and I said “nothing”. The next day she asked me again. I told her nothing and felt so embarrassed, so I added, ‘but I probably will.’ So she asked me again the third day what I got for my birthday and I said, “nothing”.

So I think I tried to down play the importance of birthdays, not make a big deal about them because that’s how mine was treated. Mom and Dad loved me, but they were too busy.

After we kids left home, Mom started a little notebook. She would write down everybody’s birthday, especially little kids she knew from church, and without fail send them a birthday card.

Everyone loved my mom and loved receiving a card from her. It meant alot to them to be remembered.

It was about remembering another person, their life and their value.

I am so thankful for her good example. I love her and I miss her.

I hope each of us stop and see the value of our own lives, and in honoring them, begin to honor and value other’s lives more dearly.

Today I will plan ahead to remember and honor one person on their birthday.
