Does it Really Matter?

Does it really matter what I think?

Does it really matter what I say?

Does it really matter what I do?

Someone once told me, “Whatever I do has no effect on you.”

Is that really true?

When the kids were small, I read them a story about the boy and his dog… this is my recollection of it.

One morning, a father woke up and spoke sharply to his wife while the kids were getting ready for school, she then spoke unkindly to the daughter, who then yelled at her brother. The boy in turn kicked the dog. It was a long hard day for that family.

The next morning, father woke up and told his wife he loved her, she spoke kindly to their daughter, who was kind to her little brother. The boy in turned hugged the dog. It was a better day for their family.

What thoughts are we allowing to repeat inside ourselves even though no one else can hear them?

What words are we choosing to speak, whether out-loud or online for others to hear and see?

What am I doing because of what I choose to think or speak about?

Is another person lifted higher because of me?

Or pushed down because of me?

I want to encourage others to go higher, be better, do better.

I believe inside everyone of us is the desire to help others do their best.

Other people need our help….there’s work to be done.

I’ll go first!

I will think about my thoughts.

An Appeal to our Better Selves

I’ve heard it said you need to know your audience before you start talking…so you’ll know if anybody’s listening…

So today I decided my audience, the people I want to talk to are those who already want to do the good thing, they already have convictions about right and wrong, they just need someone to give them permission to step out of the box of societal-correctness and be free to share what’s really on their heart, what they really want to do, who they really want to be, what good they really want to do, how they really want to conduct their lives and their family.

I give you permission!

I am just a nobody, but I am also a somebody and I gave myself permission. Now I am giving you what has been given me…permission to be your best you!

Don’t hold yourself back. This world, your community, your family needs you!

Why the Lighthouse?

I mentioned the lighthouse in a previous post.

What is it about a lighthouse that is so endearing?

Besides their unique structural stability and charm, they represent something else.

Valiant men have risked their lives and died building lighthouses to save lives…that ships at sea might not crash, be broken and sink because they couldn’t see the danger there.

Said James Ward Hyland III, President and Founder of the Lighthouse Preservation Society of Newbury Port, Massachussetts:

Lighthouses appeal to the interest and better instinct of man because they are symbolic of never-ceasing watchfulness, of steadfast endurance in every exposure, of widespread helpfulness. The building and the keeping of the lights is a picturesque and humanitarian work of the nation.”

Somehow, just knowing that someone cares for you, is watching out for you, makes life easier to live. We all need those somebodies. We all need to be those somebodies.

These characteristics in people are what make a nation great and bring out the best in each other.

Loving, Kindness, Courage, Care….Let these be found in me.
