Growth in Our Winters

Big snowy day out today. Kids sledding down the hill across the road. It’s cold! The leaves have all fallen off leaving the trees naked! Nothing appears to be growing.

But wait! Underneath the snow, the ice, the cold tundra, there are roots and bulbs hibernating and growing ever so slowly in true winter fashion, becoming stronger and more firmly established because that’s the only place growth can take place in winter time…beneath the soil, where no one can see, while nobody is watching.

It’s wise to plant shrubs, trees, perennials, and bulbs in the fall instead of spring. Water them in well and let the roots adapt and reach out during the cold months of winter. Come spring, they will have a head start and show life before others. They will have already acclimated to their new home and been well watered by winter snows and ice.

It’s actually the same with us. We grow stronger in our seemingly lifeless winters. There are less distractions keeping our roots from developing. Our energy and strength have been diverted to growth even though we cannot see it many times.

If we’re patient; however, and don’t give up in the wintery trials, our springtimes will come again with newer, stronger, more beautiful growth and floribunda above the ground where it can be seen.

It may be winter now, but spring will come to you again…just wait! 🙂

Thanksgiving Part 2

Today I share another old Thanksgiving-Wintry hymn from the 1800’s. Such great reminders of God’s goodness and our need to thank Him for providing for us.

I am thankful for Wikepedia helping out with the lyrics and history.

“Come, ye thankful people, come,
Raise the song of harvest home!
All is safely gathered in,
Ere the winter storms begin;
God, our Maker, doth provide
For our wants to be supplied;
Come to God’s own temple, come;
Raise the song of harvest home!”

God will provide for us.

Thanksgiving Day!

This old hymn has been a favorite of mine. You might enjoy it too!

We Gather Together” is a Christian hymn of Dutch origin written in 1597 by Adrianus Valerius as “Wilt heden nu treden” to celebrate the Dutch victory over Spanish forces in the Battle of Turnhout. It was originally set to a Dutch folk tune. In the United States, it is popularly associated with Thanksgiving Day and is often sung at family meals and at religious services on that day.

  1. We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing;
    He chastens and hastens His will to make known;
    The wicked oppressing now cease from distressing;
    Sing praises to His Name; He forgets not His own.
  2. Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining,
    Ordaining, maintaining His kingdom divine;
    So from the beginning the fight we were winning;
    Thou, Lord, were at our side, all glory be Thine!
  3. We all do extol Thee, Thou Leader triumphant,
    And pray that Thou still our Defender will be;
    Let Thy congregation escape tribulation;
    Thy Name be ever praised! O Lord, make us free!
