Nobodies vs Somebodies

‘I’m just a nobody, doing nothin’, in the middle of nowhere. I don’t know how to do nothin’.

Is that so?  Switch it around and say…

‘I’m a somebody, doing something, in the middle of somewhere. I know how to do something!’

That feels better doesn’t it! Just to hear yourself place some importance on yourself and in your voice… Say it again, “I’m a somebody doing something, in the middle of somewhere. I know how to do something!”

Everybody is a somebody… somebody important enough to have something to do no matter how big (or small) it is. There it is. You think because it is a small something it is not important. Size does not equal importance. Need and value determine importance.

‘It’s only a small tree, not really big enough to plant or do any good. Why waste my time and energy planting it?’ But the little tree grows and soon provides shade for your lawn chair while you drink your morning coffee, or cool off after a busy day. Was it worth it? Was it an important decision?

‘I’m just a mom or dad or son or daughter, solo-mio, nobody important’. But you cook the meals, you bring home the bacon, you help your brothers and sisters, you bring joy at the end of the day by walking in the door – glad to be home! Somebody needs you. You are important to another somebody – even if it’s only one!

On a floody day somebody (a one-body) raked open the street gutter drain since nobody else would. The water went down, the street became clear and everybody could drive through. It was only a nobody doing ‘nothing’ important who turned himself into a somebody with something important to do that opened the path for everybody.

Today I am calling all the nobodies to turn themselves into a somebody and go find something important (remember need/value, not size) and do it!

It’s raining here; I need to check the gutters.

Do Your Destiny

‘But I don’t know what my destiny is!!!’

It doesn’t matter. We’re all on a path to somewhere…often an unknown somewhere. ‘So if I don’t know what/where my destiny is how can I do it?’

We simply begin where we are…as we go along our daily path of life, we see things that could be improved. A idea comes to mind – ‘I know how to make that work better’; ‘If we did it this way, it would save time and money’; ‘I hear people asking how to do such and such, maybe I could teach a class for them’; ‘They need help, maybe I could offer my services – maybe create a service for others needing help in that area…’

Take a look around in your day-to-day and just begin doing your good thing no matter how insignificant you think it is. Somebody needs your idea, your help, your work. Try something, try several somethings.

It doesn’t have to be anything big or noticeable. We need the small pieces to make the larger pieces work. In other words, the big things cannot work without all the small parts!

Who knows, maybe – just maybe –  you will be doing your destiny on your way to it!

No more waiting and wondering. You’re already doing it!

The Work Force

What is forcing you to work at a job you dislike, aren’t fit for, or just hate going to work for? This is not the type ‘work-force’ (forced work) we need.

We do need all hands on deck (pardon an old Navy phrase). There is something… something important that needs doing, having your name on it. This means you are qualified, you are needed to do some task…I don’t mean just one thing for only one time.

But there is a work for you to do which you will like, or can learn to like benefitting you, yours and others.

Skilled laborers. This means somebody (a laborer) doing a task (labor), and doing it well (skilled). ‘I can’t do anything, I’m not skilled and I don’t like to work.’

Yet, everyone likes the feeling of accomplishment -we’re made that way! So perhaps you haven’t found what you like to do or haven’t worked at it long enough to see how good you can become and gain the satisfaction of a job well done! This will propel you. The feeling/knowing you can become skilled, and like doing a ‘well-done’ job might change your mind about work.

I used to hate sewing. (I had to since store bought clothes did not fit me back then; I was too tall) It was hard. It took concentration. I goofed up and had to rip out darts and sleeves so many times there became holes in the fabric. I was learning how. But I could picture the end result if I could ever learn the technique. Now I like to sew and am pretty good at it. I don’t have to force myself to sew what I envision. I think about what I want to make, how I want to do it and begin.

Then the fun starts because I might change my mind partway through and decide I’d like to make it look this way instead. Or use a different fabric or color, or add some trim or different edging.

The point is, we can find something that appeals to us in any category or work and begin to think it through, embellish it, and actually find ourselves creating/making/doing something we like to do.

If you’re a janitor, make your work the best the customer has seen. Surprise them at how good your work is! If you clean houses, make it your mission to cause people to notice the difference. If you mow lawns, let yours stand a cut above the rest. You will feel rewarded with a job well-done and nobody forced you to do good work.

What type of work could you begin doing today?
