Every time you turn on the light, you are pushing back darkness. Why do I need to know this?
The world is so thankful for the lightbulb invention. We are almost totally dependent upon it. We need light to see! To see to iron our shirts, which nobody does anymore, to see what our hair looks like in the morning, or not :/, to see where to drive at night, to walk in big stores with no windows,
There are two types of darkness, basically. One taken care of by lightbulbs, the other takes a different kind of illumination. It’s a darkness inside of us that nobody can see with their eyes and often the person who is dark inside cannot see it either. But it is a darkness that can be felt somehow. You can feel it inside when it tries to come upon you, you can feel it when you’re around those covered by it.
Our job is to push back against that darkness. People need to see. People want to see. It only takes a crack of light to begin pushing back the dark.
Dark prevents you from seeing. Light enables you to see.
So how am I going to push back the dark?
I think light begins to shine in many different ways. We shine light and push back darkness through an encouraging word, a simple smile, a card or letter, helping them with a difficult project, dropping off a loaf of bread or pot of soup. You probably have a list of ideas too 🙂
When we help push back the dark, the gloom, uncertainties, confusion, despair, helplessness in others lives, it will also push back any darkness trying to encroach on us.
It sounds so simple, it can’t be that easy. But it really is. We humans tend to make things harder than they are.
So there it is. We push back dark with light.
Where am I seeing darkness I can shine some light on and help that person see more clearly?
